Lane network
Narrow, irregular streets divide the area into very small blocks. On the map they create a dense, fine-grained pattern that fills almost every part of the frame.

Ang mapa
Ebara Map Poster & Print
Ebara lies in Shinagawa, in the south-west of central Tokyo. It was once a ward in its own right before being merged with Shinagawa after the Second World War, and the name remains in local stations and districts. From above, the area is a fine mesh of streets, far denser and more irregular than the planned grids found in many other cities.
The pattern comes from Tokyo's growth over former farmland, where paths and field boundaries became lanes lined with houses and small apartment buildings. Private railway lines cut diagonally through this mesh, and around each station a short shopping street, or shotengai, runs out into the residential blocks. Wide roads are few, which makes the map almost entirely texture.
An Ebara map poster works well precisely because of that density. In black and white the thousands of short lanes read almost like a fabric, with the rail lines and the occasional larger avenue giving it structure. It is an image of how most Tokyo residents actually live, away from the towers and major hubs.

Private rail lines
Commuter railway lines slice through the neighbourhood at angles, their straight tracks standing out clearly against the looser street pattern around them.
Station streets
Around each station short shopping streets extend into the residential blocks, forming small local centres that can be traced as slightly busier knots in the mesh.

Bakit Ebara
Isang mapang may kahulugan
For anyone who has lived in Ebara, the lanes around their station are what Tokyo means to them. A poster of these streets holds that local scale, the walk from the platform to the front door, rather than the city's famous skyline.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line are yours to change, so you can add a station name, a building or the year you moved in. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
