Freudenberg sits in the hills of the Siegerland in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia, where valleys fold into one another and roads follow the streams. On a map the town reads as a scatter of settlements linked by curving routes, with the historic core a small, unusually regular block set against a slope. Forest covers much of the surrounding ground, so built areas appear as pale islands in a darker field.
The core is the Alter Flecken, the old town whose black-and-white half-timbered houses stand in near-parallel rows under dark slate roofs.
