Huamantla lies in the eastern part of the Mexican state of Tlaxcala, on a high plain at the foot of La Malinche, one of the country's great volcanoes. It is a designated Pueblo Mágico. The town is best known for its August festival, when residents lay out long carpets of coloured sawdust and flowers along the streets overnight.
The centre follows a classic colonial grid, with straight streets meeting at right angles around a main square, a parish church and the former Franciscan convent.
