Jodhpur grew at the foot of Mehrangarh, one of the largest forts in India, which stands on a steep rocky hill above the old city. Rao Jodha founded the city in 1459, and the walled quarter below the fort still keeps its tight, irregular lanes. On a map they appear as a dense knot of streets pressed against the hill.
Many houses in the old city are painted blue, which gave Jodhpur its name as the Blue City.
