From above, Karratha reads as a young town. It was laid out in the late 1960s to house workers for the Pilbara iron ore industry, and the plan shows it: curving suburban loops, cul-de-sacs and broad arterial roads rather than an old grid. Rocky ridges run between the neighbourhoods and break the street pattern into separate pockets, so the town looks less like one block of streets than a cluster of settlements.
North of the town the land flattens into tidal flats and mangrove edges along Nickol Bay, and the coastline fades out in fine, irregular lines. Roads run west towards Dampier and the Burrup Peninsula, where the Murujuga rock art, one of the largest collections of petroglyphs in the world, sits among piles of weathered boulders.
