Krasnoarmeysk lies in Saratov Oblast, southwest of Saratov, on the right-bank side of the Volga. The town follows the small Karamysh River, and its streets form a fairly regular grid on gentle ground. Beyond the edge of town the map opens into steppe and farmland, with long straight roads and field boundaries crossing wide, empty spaces.
The town began in the eighteenth century as Balzer, one of the colonies founded by German settlers invited to the Volga region. It became a centre of textile weaving, known in particular for a striped cotton cloth called sarpinka. The German name was dropped in the twentieth century, but the orderly grid reflects that colonial origin.
