Meihekou lies in the south of Jilin province, in rolling country that rises toward the Changbai foothills. On a map the town sits in a valley. A river runs through the built-up area, and the streets gather along its banks before giving way to farmland and wooded slopes on every side.
The name means roughly the mouth of the Plum River, which is a good way to read the map. Water sets the direction here. The main roads follow the valley floor, and the newer districts spread across flatter ground as the town grows.
