Neerpelt lies in the Belgian province of Limburg, in the sandy Kempen region, close to the border with the Netherlands. In 2019 it merged with neighbouring Overpelt to form the municipality of Pelt, but the name still marks a clear place on the map. Its centre sits in a landscape of conifer plantations, heathland and scattered hamlets.
Two waterways shape the map. The Bocholt–Herentals canal cuts across the area in a long, disciplined straight line. The river Dommel takes a very different path, winding north towards the Netherlands.
