The Siak River
The deep, slow river curves through the north of the city. It was once the city's trade route to the Strait of Malacca and remains the main natural feature on the map.

Ang mapa
Pekanbaru Map Poster & Print
Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province, lies on the Siak River in the lowlands of central Sumatra. On the map, the river curves across the northern part of the city. The older trading and port areas sit along its southern bank, and the newer districts spread south and west across very flat ground.
Pekanbaru began as a river market and grew rapidly in the twentieth century with the development of the Riau oil fields, which made the province one of Indonesia's most important sources of oil. A Pekanbaru map poster shows the contrast between the tight blocks near the river and the broad arterial roads and larger plots of the expanding city.
Bridges across the Siak connect the centre to the districts on the northern bank. Because the land is so flat, the city has grown in every direction without hills or coastline to restrict it. Plantations and rural land surround the outskirts. The result is a map with one strong curving waterway and a loose grid of roads extending outward from it.

River bridges
Several bridges cross the Siak and link the old centre to the northern districts. They form distinct points along the curve of the river.
Open lowland growth
With no hills or coastline to constrain it, the city extends in long, straight arterial roads with new neighbourhoods filling the space between them.
