The temple compound forms a large rectangle near the centre, with streets tracing its edges in the manner of many Tamil temple towns. The temple is known for its presiding form, Sankaranarayanar, which unites Shiva and Vishnu in a single image, and each year the Aadi Thapasu festival draws large crowds of pilgrims.
