Shashamane sits in the Oromia region, on the main road that runs south from Addis Ababa through the Rift Valley towards Hawassa. Its position as a junction shapes the whole map. The town is widely known for its Rastafari community, which settled on land linked to a grant made by Emperor Haile Selassie in the mid-twentieth century.
