Tharangambadi, long known to Europeans as Tranquebar, lies on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu. The Danish East India Company set up a trading post here in 1620, and the town stayed a Danish colony for more than two centuries until it was sold to the British in 1845. Fort Dansborg, the seventeenth-century Danish fort, still stands close to the beach.
The old town is a small, regular grid within the line of its former walls, with a main street running from the Landgate toward the sea. Churches, colonial houses and the fort form a compact ensemble. In 1706 the German missionaries Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg and Heinrich Plütschau arrived here and began one of the first Protestant missions in India.
