Willich lies on the flat Lower Rhine plain, between Krefeld, Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach. The present town was formed in 1970 by joining four places: Willich, Anrath, Schiefbahn and Neersen. On a map that history is easy to read, because the four centres still stand apart, each with its own knot of streets surrounded by fields.
The land is almost level, so the pattern is set by old roads and farm tracks rather than terrain.
