Ābdānān is a town in Ilam Province in western Iran, among the folded mountains of the Zagros. It sits in a valley at the foot of Kabir Kuh, one of the longest ridges in the range, and on a map the relief shapes everything. The town occupies a relatively level strip of land, with steep slopes rising above it and ravines cutting down from the heights.
Streets in the centre form a compact, mostly regular network, stretched along the valley in the same direction as the mountains. Around the town, orchards, fields and seasonal streams fill the lower ground. Roads leave the valley in long curves as they climb over the ridges toward neighbouring towns, following the folds of the land.
The surrounding countryside is known for its oak forests, part of the Zagros woodlands that cover much of Ilam Province, and for its dramatic mountain scenery.
