Salt pans
Around the estuary, evaporation ponds divide the flat land into large rectangles and strips, one of the most graphic patterns you can find on any coastal map.

Areia Branca Map Poster & Print
Areia Branca lies on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte, where the Apodi-Mossoró river reaches the Atlantic. The name means white sand, and the landscape around it matches: pale dunes, beaches and wide, flat land along the estuary. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets by the water, surrounded by large geometric shapes of salt pans.
Salt is what defines the area. This stretch of coast is one of Brazil's main salt producing regions, and the evaporation ponds form grids of rectangles that cover huge areas around the river mouth. Offshore lies a man-made island terminal built to load salt onto ships, since the shallow coast makes a conventional port difficult.
An Areia Branca map poster brings together the fine street grid, the branching estuary, the long shoreline and the patterned salt fields. It is an unusual map, part town, part industrial landscape, and in black and white the salt pans look almost like an abstract drawing.
