Arida lies on the western coast of Wakayama Prefecture, where the Arida River widens and runs into the Kii Channel. From above, the town fills the low ground near the river mouth. Streets follow the banks and the shoreline, and the land quickly rises into steep hills on either side. The flat part is narrow, so the built-up area stays tight between water and slope.

The hills are the reason people know the name. Arida mandarins, sold across Japan as Arida mikan, grow on terraced slopes that climb the valley sides. At map scale the terraces show up as fine contour-like bands above the houses. Along the coast, harbour basins and industrial ground make a harder, straighter line where the town meets the sea.

A black-and-white rendering suits this layered landscape: a curved river, a ragged coastline and closely stacked hillside lines around a small grid of lanes.
