Ashburn has no single old centre. From above it reads as a patchwork of planned communities, each with its own loops of residential streets, ponds and golf fairways, stitched together by wide arterial roads. The pattern is typical of fast-growing northern Virginia, where former fields became neighbourhoods in a few decades.
The strongest lines on the map are infrastructure. Route 7 runs along the north, the Dulles Greenway crosses the south, and the straight corridor of the Washington and Old Dominion Trail follows an old railway bed through the middle. Between them, large rectangular campuses mark the data centres that have made Ashburn one of the busiest internet hubs in the world.
