Bagrām lies in Parwan province in Afghanistan, on the Shomali plain north of Kabul. The plain is surrounded by mountains, and on a map the town sits on open, flat ground with the foothills of the Hindu Kush rising in the distance. Rivers flowing down from the valleys to the north cross the plain nearby.
The largest single feature on the map is the airfield, with its long runway and extensive surrounding facilities, which dominates the area. The town's streets lie close by, a smaller cluster of lanes and compounds connected to the main roads leading to Kabul and Charikar.
The area has a much older history. The archaeological site at Begram is identified with ancient Kapisa, and excavations there uncovered the Begram Hoard, a collection of ivories, glass and bronzes showing trade connections from India to the Mediterranean.
