Bandar-e Gaz lies in the west of Golestan Province, on the southern edge of Gorgan Bay, a shallow lagoon enclosed from the Caspian Sea by the long, narrow Miankaleh peninsula. On the map, water fills the northern part of the frame, while the town's streets spread across flat coastal land that rises gradually toward the wooded slopes of the Alborz to the south.
