Barro is a small municipality in the south of Ceará, in the semi-arid interior of north-eastern Brazil, not far from the border with Paraíba. From above, the town is compact: a modest grid of streets laid out around a central square and church, with blocks thinning out quickly into the surrounding countryside. The built-up area is small enough that its outline is clearly visible on a single sheet.
The landscape around Barro is typical of the sertão. Low hills, dry-forest caatinga and seasonal watercourses shape the land, and small reservoirs, known locally as açudes, hold water through the long dry months. Roads leave the town toward neighbouring municipalities and the Cariri region to the south, drawing long lines across otherwise open ground.
