Beni Mellal lies where two landscapes meet. To the north and west, the flat, irrigated Tadla plain stretches away in a patchwork of fields and orchards. To the south and east, the Middle Atlas rises abruptly. On a map, the city is pressed against this mountain front, and its streets fan out onto the plain.
Water shapes the place. The spring of Ain Asserdoun emerges from the foot of the mountains above the city and feeds gardens and terraces. The restored Kasbah of Ras el Ain looks down over the town. Around the older centre, newer districts follow a looser, more regular plan, and roads run out across the plain between olive and citrus groves.
