Benicarló is in the north of Castellón province in the Valencian Community, on a flat coastal plain between the mountains and the Mediterranean. The town spreads in a fairly regular grid from its old centre toward the shore, where a fishing harbour reaches into the sea behind its breakwaters. Just to the south lies Peñíscola, and the coast between the two is lined with low buildings.
The countryside around Benicarló is known for its artichokes, which carry a protected designation of origin. On the map this farmland appears as a patchwork of small plots and rural tracks surrounding the town. The main coastal road and the railway pass on the inland side and add strong lines that frame the streets.
