Bochum lies at the heart of the Ruhr area in western Germany, and its map carries the traces of an industrial past: rail lines curving through the city, former industrial sites turned into parks and business districts, and a dense web of streets linking once-separate villages. The A40, known as the Ruhrschnellweg, crosses the city from east to west, while an inner ring road encloses a compact centre.

To the south, the land drops toward the Ruhr River and the Kemnader See, a reservoir lake bordered by woods and paths. The Ruhr University Bochum, built in the 1960s, occupies a large hilltop campus above the valley, and its concrete buildings appear on the map as a bold, regular block. Between the university and the centre, residential districts spread across gently rolling land.

Bochum is known for the German Mining Museum, marked by its tall green winding tower, for the musical Starlight Express, staged here since 1988, and for the nightlife quarter called the Bermuda Triangle.
