Buguda sits in the Ganjam district of southern Odisha, inland from the Bay of Bengal coast. From above it is a small, dense town. Irregular lanes pack close together near the centre and loosen as they reach the farmland around it. Roads leave the town in several directions toward nearby villages, so the street pattern looks like a knot tied in the middle of open fields.

The town is best known for the Biranchi Narayan temple, a sun temple whose painted interior murals draw visitors interested in the region's devotional art. On a map the temple precinct is one of the few clearly defined blocks in the old core. It anchors the surrounding lanes, much as older temple towns across Odisha grew outward from their shrines.
