Baubau waterfront
The main city spreads along the south-west coast facing the strait. Its grid of streets thickens near the port, then thins out into the hills behind.

Buton Island Map Poster & Print
Buton lies off the south-eastern arm of Sulawesi. It is a large island stretched roughly north to south and fringed by bays, headlands and smaller islands. Much of the interior is forested upland with few roads, so on a map the streets gather along the coast and around a handful of towns. Between them are broad pale areas where the terrain takes over.
The densest street pattern belongs to Baubau in the south-west, the island's main city and port. Above it stands the fortress of the former Sultanate of Buton. Its long stone wall traces the edge of a hilltop, and it is often described as one of the largest fortresses in the world by area. The irregular outline sits just inland from the harbour streets and is easy to pick out.
Buton is also known for its natural asphalt, mined for road building across Indonesia. It is home to the Cia-Cia community, some of whom have used the Korean Hangul alphabet to write their language. A Buton Island map poster captures a place where sea trade, an old sultanate and a quiet interior share one long outline.

Wolio fortress
The walls of the old sultanate's citadel follow the crest of a hill above Baubau. They form a long, irregular loop that stands out clearly among the surrounding streets.
Indented coastline
Bays, inlets and small offshore islands break the shoreline into a busy, jagged edge. This gives the poster plenty of fine detail even where the interior stays sparse.
