Byblos, known locally as Jbeil, sits on the Mediterranean coast north of Beirut and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the world. From above, you can still read its layers. The small, rounded harbour is at the water's edge, the old town has tight lanes around it, and the archaeological site sits on the promontory beside them.
The city was a major Phoenician port. Its name passed into Greek as the word for papyrus, and later into the word for books. Early examples of the Phoenician alphabet were found here, and the site, with its Crusader castle and ruins from many periods, is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Old souk lanes
Narrow, irregular streets gather near the castle and harbour. Their fine, winding pattern contrasts sharply with the straighter roads of the modern town.
Archaeological promontory
The ruins and Crusader castle occupy open ground beside the old town. On the poster, this area appears as a distinct space beside the dense streets, marking the ancient city.
