Caltagirone stands on high ground in the interior of southeastern Sicily, between the Catania plain and the Erei mountains. The town spreads across three hills, and its streets curl around them in tight bends, drop in steep lanes and meet in small squares. From above, the historic centre has an irregular, almost knotted outline that follows the shape of the land very closely.
The town has been known for ceramics for centuries, and the craft shows up everywhere, from tiled balconies to the famous Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte, a staircase of 142 steps faced with hand-painted majolica. After the earthquake of 1693 much of the town was rebuilt in late Baroque style, and today it belongs to the UNESCO-listed Val di Noto group.
