Dingxi lies on the Loess Plateau in Gansu Province, south-east of Lanzhou. From above, the landscape is the strongest feature. Deeply eroded hills surround the city, and the built-up area follows the valley floor, where the flat ground allows roads, housing and a railway to run side by side.
The region is dry, and much of the farming on the surrounding slopes takes place on terraces cut into the loess. Dingxi is widely known in China for its potatoes, which grow well in these conditions and have become an important part of the local economy.
A Dingxi map poster shows a city shaped by terrain. The long, narrow form of the urban area follows the valley, main roads and the railway run parallel along its length, and the side streets climb only as far as the slopes will allow before the hills take over.
