Seen from above, Durango sits at the floor of a narrow valley in Bizkaia, with the Ibaizabal river curving through its centre and a network of small bridges tying the two banks together. The medieval core is dense and roughly rectangular, its short parallel streets marking the outline of the old walled town, while newer blocks spread along the valley in longer, looser rows.
The mountains are never far away on the map. To the south the land climbs quickly toward the Urkiola range, and the road network bends to follow the valley rather than cutting across it. That contrast between a close-grained centre and open, folded terrain gives the town a strong silhouette even at small scale, with the river as its clearest organising line.
Durango is widely known across the Basque Country for its annual book and record fair, the Durangoko Azoka, held each December and dedicated to Basque-language culture.
