Ebetsu lies just east of Sapporo, where the Ishikari River swings through the flat plain on its way to the sea. The river dominates the map. It is a broad, gently curving channel that tributaries join near the city, and bridges and levees mark the points where roads and rail cross it.
The city grew around brick-making, using clay from the river lowlands, and Ebetsu is still associated with red brick buildings. It is also a university town with several campuses. Their quads and sports fields show up clearly on an Ebetsu map poster as open rectangles among the housing.
To the south-west, Nopporo Forest Park covers a large wooded area shared with Sapporo and neighbouring towns. In black and white it becomes a calm, empty field beside the regular streets of the residential districts.

A large block of protected woodland borders the city on the Sapporo side. On the map it is almost entirely free of streets, which leaves an open space that balances the denser districts.
