Falconara Marittima stretches along the Adriatic just north of Ancona in the Marche. Its map is a study in parallel lines. The shoreline, the coastal railway and the main road all run next to each other for kilometres, squeezing the lower town into a long, thin band between the sea and the first hills.
Above this ribbon, the old settlement of Falconara Alta sits on a hilltop, with the remains of its castle and a small cluster of streets looking down on the coast. To the north, the wide mouth of the Esino river breaks the coastline, and the runways of Ancona's airport, which lies within the municipality, draw a sharp straight line inland.
The large oil refinery on the seafront is part of the town's recent history and adds its own geometric block to the map.
