Fasta Åland is the main island of the Åland archipelago, the autonomous, Swedish-speaking region of Finland between Sweden and the Finnish mainland. Its coastline is extremely broken, full of long bays, narrow sounds and peninsulas left by the retreat of the ice. From above the land and water seem to interlock.
The capital, Mariehamn, sits on a narrow peninsula in the south, between two harbours, Västerhamn and Österhamn. Its orderly grid of broad, tree-lined streets stands out against the organic coastline around it. Country roads fan out from the town to villages and farms across the rest of the island.
