Gilgit stands on the Gilgit River in northern Pakistan, near its confluence with the Hunza River and a short distance from where the combined waters reach the Indus. The valley is narrow and flat-bottomed, and the town fills it from side to side: bazaar streets, orchards and neighbourhoods on the terraces, with bare mountain walls rising steeply above them.

The river is the backbone of the map, curving through the valley with the main town on its southern bank and bridges linking to settlements opposite. The airport runway, laid out on the valley floor, forms one of the straightest lines on the sheet. Roads follow the river and the base of the slopes, leading out toward the Karakoram Highway, which passes just east of town.

Gilgit has long been a stopping point on routes between South and Central Asia, and today it is the administrative centre of Gilgit-Baltistan and a base for travellers heading to Hunza and the high peaks. A Buddha figure carved into a cliff at nearby Kargah is one of its best-known sites. A Gilgit map poster frames a town shaped entirely by its valley.
