Guadix lies on a high plateau in the province of Granada, with the Sierra Nevada rising to the south. The map shows two towns in one. The lower centre has the dense, irregular streets of an old Andalusian city around its cathedral and Moorish alcazaba. The southern districts break up into a maze of small lanes cut among clay hills.
That second pattern belongs to the Barrio de las Cuevas, where many residents still live in cave houses dug into the soft ground. White chimneys and doorways dot the slopes. On a map the effect is unusual. Paths loop around rounded mounds instead of forming blocks, and the edge of town fades into ravines and badlands.
