Ibi lies inland in the province of Alicante, in the Foia de Castalla, a high valley ringed by mountains. On the map, the older streets climb and curve up a slope, following the terrain instead of a grid. Newer neighbourhoods and long rectangular industrial blocks spread out across the flatter ground below. The contour of the land shapes almost every street, which gives the town an uneven, layered outline.

Ibi is known across Spain as a centre of toy manufacturing, and the valley is often called the valley of the toy. The town has a toy museum, and several of its roundabouts and squares carry toy-themed monuments. Every 28 December, Ibi celebrates Els Enfarinats. On that day townspeople in costume take over the town for a day of mock rule, with flour and eggs thrown in the streets.

An Ibi map poster shows that contrast between the tightly wound old quarter on the hillside and the broad, regular footprint of the factories and warehouses. Around both, the roads out of town wind toward the neighbouring valley towns and the mountain passes.
