Itoshima lies just west of Fukuoka City, covering much of the Itoshima Peninsula in northern Kyushu. On a map, its shape is defined by the sea: coves, headlands and beaches on the Genkai Sea to the north, and bays on the western side. Inland, rice fields fill the valleys between wooded hills.
The best-known sight is Sakurai Futamigaura, a pair of wedded rocks joined by a sacred rope, with a white torii standing in the sea in front of them. The main campus of Kyushu University, at Ito, extends into the hills on the city's eastern edge. The coast is popular for surfing and weekend trips from Fukuoka.

The wedded rocks and white torii stand just off the coast at Sakurai. They are too small to appear as more than a detail on the map, but they are the reason many people know Itoshima.
