Jhumri Telaiya sits in the Koderma district of Jharkhand, on the uneven upland of the Chota Nagpur plateau. From above, the town is a loose cluster of lanes gathered around its main roads and railway line, with fields and low, scrubby hills pressing in from every side. The name has travelled much further than the town itself.
