Kahului sits on the low neck of land that joins the two volcanic halves of Maui. The West Maui Mountains rise on one side and the long slope of Haleakalā on the other. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets pressed against Kahului Harbor, the island's main commercial port. The runways of Kahului Airport stretch along the shore just to the east.
Much of the town was laid out after the Second World War as a planned community for workers from the sugar plantations that once covered the central plain, and it is still sometimes called the Dream City. Its residential streets curve gently around parks and schools. Larger roads fan out toward Wailuku, Pāʻia and the upcountry highways that climb the slopes of Haleakalā.
Between the harbor and the airport lies Kanahā Pond, a wetland sanctuary for Hawaiian stilts and other native waterbirds. On the map it shows as a quiet open space among the roads. This shallow wildlife sanctuary lies between the town and the airport. Its irregular outline breaks up the street pattern and marks the place where native waterbirds feed and nest.
Airport runways
The crossing runways of Kahului Airport sit just east of town along the coast. They are long, clean strokes that anchor the composition and mark the island's main gateway.
