Close to the equator
The coordinates line puts Katwa a fraction of a degree north of the equator, a detail that gives the printed poster a quiet point of interest.

Katwa Map Poster & Print
Katwa lies in the highlands of North Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, next to the trading city of Butembo. It is almost on the equator, only a few kilometres north of the line, but because it sits high up the climate is cooler than that position would suggest. The land is broken into ridges and valleys, and the settlement spreads across them.
On a map this terrain produces an irregular, organic pattern. Roads follow ridgelines and valley floors instead of a grid, and smaller tracks branch off toward farms and neighbouring communities. There are no big planned axes. What you see is a web that has grown to fit the hills, thicker where the town meets Butembo and thinner as it reaches out into the farmland around it.
A Katwa map poster is a portrait of a highland place that few printed maps bother to show in any detail. In black and white, the curving roads and the density of the built-up core come through clearly without the colour of the landscape, leaving just the shape of a community that has adapted to difficult, beautiful ground.

Roads on the ridges
The main routes follow the high ground and the valley floors, so the network curves and forks in ways that trace the shape of the hills underneath.
Linked to Butembo
Katwa's streets merge into those of neighbouring Butembo, and the map shows how the two places work as one continuous highland settlement.
