Kęty lies in Lesser Poland, on the Soła River between Bielsko-Biała and Oświęcim. Its historic centre follows the classic plan of a medieval Polish chartered town: a rectangular market square at the heart, with streets leaving from its corners and sides in a regular pattern. Around this core, later districts extend outward toward the river and the surrounding countryside.
The Soła gives the map a strong natural line, running along the western side of the town with its broad bed and riverside greenery. To the south, the land begins to rise toward the Beskid Mały, and the street pattern loosens as it meets the hills. Kęty is known as the birthplace of Saint John Cantius, or Jan Kanty, the fifteenth-century priest, scholar and professor at the Kraków Academy, who is a patron saint of Poland.
