Kitsuki is a small city in Oita Prefecture on the southern side of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Kyushu. Its historic centre is one of the best-preserved Edo-period castle towns in Japan. Samurai residences were built on two parallel plateaus, and merchants lived in the low street between them. This arrangement is often called a sandwich-shaped castle town.
The layout still shows clearly on a map. Two raised districts run side by side with a narrow commercial strip below them, and short stone-paved slopes climb from the merchant quarter up to each plateau. The best known is Suya-no-saka. To the east, the reconstructed Kitsuki Castle stands on a promontory above the mouth of the river where it meets the sea. Rice fields and newer streets then spread across the flatter land.
