Lapa lies on the high plateau of southern Paraná, about an hour's drive southwest of Curitiba. Its map shows a compact historic core of straight, closely set streets. Newer neighbourhoods surround it, and beyond them lie open farmland and patches of forest. The town grew as a stopping point on the Caminho das Tropas, the old cattle-droving route that ran north from Rio Grande do Sul toward São Paulo.
The historic centre is protected as national heritage. It includes colonial houses, the Teatro São João and the Panteão dos Heróis. The Panteão honours those who died in the Siege of Lapa in 1894, during the Federalist Revolution. Just outside town, the Gruta do Monge draws visitors to a sandstone landscape tied to local religious tradition.

Droving route roads
Roads leaving Lapa follow the general direction of the old droving routes across the plateau. They draw long lines out toward the farmland and neighbouring towns.
Parque do Monge
Just outside the centre, the park around the Gruta do Monge is an irregular pocket of trails and woodland at the edge of the street pattern.
