Larnaca spreads along a wide bay on the southeastern coast of Cyprus. Its seafront, the Finikoudes promenade, runs as a long, straight edge lined with palms, with the marina and port at its northern end. Behind it, the old town is a dense web of narrow streets, while newer districts extend inland and along the coast in both directions.
Southwest of the centre lies Larnaca Salt Lake, a large, shallow basin that fills in winter and draws flamingos. On the lake's shore stands Hala Sultan Tekke, a mosque set among palms that is an important site in Cypriot Islam. Just beyond, the long runway of Larnaca International Airport forms a sharp geometric line close to the sea.
The city has ancient roots as Kition, and remains of the old settlement lie within the modern streets. The Church of Saint Lazarus, built over the saint's traditional tomb, anchors the old quarter.
