Mahrīz lies on the arid plateau of central Iran, a short drive south-east of Yazd. The town sits on open desert plain, with mountains rising in the distance, and its layout reflects the long need to manage scarce water. From above, the built area appears as a tight cluster of streets and walled plots, surrounded by open land and scattered agricultural patches.
Across the Yazd region, settlements were historically sustained by qanats, underground channels carrying water from the foothills. Their routes are often visible as lines of access shafts running across the plain.
