Manyinga is the centre of a district in Zambia's North-Western Province, a thinly populated region of miombo woodland, rivers and seasonal wetlands. The town is small and spread out. On a map it appears as a group of streets and compounds along the road that links it with neighbouring districts, with footpaths and tracks leading off into the bush toward villages.
The province lies in the upper Zambezi basin, and streams and wetlands shape the country around the town. Roads tend to follow higher, drier ground, and settlements line up along them at intervals. The result, on a wider map, is a pattern of long threads with small clusters of buildings along them.
Manyinga became a separate district relatively recently, and its centre is still developing, with new services and buildings added over time. A Manyinga map poster shows the place as it stands now. Because the town is growing, it is a record that may already look different a few years from now.
