Mashiko lies in the southeast of Tochigi Prefecture, in countryside of low wooded hills and flat rice paddies. Seen from above, it does not have a central grid. Its roads follow the valleys, and houses and workshops cluster along them, with farmland filling the spaces between and forested slopes closing in from the edges.
The town is known across Japan for Mashiko ware, a sturdy folk pottery. In the twentieth century the potter Shoji Hamada settled here and helped make Mashiko a centre of the mingei folk-craft movement. Many kilns and studios are still in use, and the pottery fairs held in spring and autumn draw large crowds.
On paper, the kiln sites and studios are hard to tell apart from ordinary houses, but the way the settlement spreads along the hillsides says a lot about the craft. Climbing kilns need slopes, and the potters followed them. A Mashiko map poster records the landscape the craft grew from, in the same modest tone as the pottery.

Studios and workshops are spread along the hill edges where the ground rises, the kind of slope traditionally needed for the town's climbing kilns.
