Mesa sits in the eastern Phoenix metropolitan area, and its map is a lesson in the Western grid. Major roads run exactly north to south and east to west, one mile apart, framing square sections filled with curving suburban streets, cul-de-sacs and shopping centres. The pattern repeats for miles, broken mainly by freeways and the lines of irrigation canals.
Those canals follow routes first engineered by the Hohokam people many centuries ago, and they still run diagonally through the grid, drawing slanted lines across an otherwise square pattern. The Salt River bed marks the northern edge, and to the east the city stretches out toward the Superstition Mountains and the open desert beyond.
Mesa was founded by Mormon settlers in 1878 and takes its name from the flat tableland on which it stands. It is one of the largest cities in Arizona and hosts Major League spring training games each year.
