Mestre is the mainland heart of the municipality of Venice, facing the lagoon a few kilometres from the historic islands. On the map its streets cluster around Piazza Ferretto, and residential districts spread inland from there. The industrial port of Marghera lies to the south, and to the east the lagoon shore opens into flat water and marsh.
The Ponte della Libertà and the railway bridge beside it cross the lagoon to Venice in one long, straight line that pulls the eye towards the islands. Mestre's station is a major rail junction for the region. A ring of old forts surrounds the town, among them Forte Marghera near the lagoon, and Parco San Giuliano stretches along the shore.
