Mitsuke is in the central part of Niigata Prefecture, on the broad Echigo Plain between the cities of Nagaoka and Sanjō. The land is low and flat, with well-watered rice paddies on every side. On a map, the built-up area forms a compact centre with a wide ring of rectangular fields around it.
The town has a long association with textiles and is particularly known in Japan for knitwear. On the map, that history is not visible, but the town's layout is: a core of dense streets, a river nearby and roads that run out across the fields toward the neighbouring cities.
