Montepuez sits in the interior of Cabo Delgado Province in northern Mozambique, well inland from the Indian Ocean coast. From above, the town has no dense historic core. It reads as a central cluster of blocks around the main roads, and the grid loosens into scattered lanes and compounds as it runs into the open country around it. The road network makes the pattern. The town takes its name from the Montepuez River, which flows east across the province toward the coast.
